ORPHAN CENTER

JOREC's community outreach programs have exposed the traumatic consequences of neglect of orphaned children due to lack of access to education, shelter, medical services and other basic social services. The socio-economic and environmental conditions surrounding orphaned children make them prone to health risks.

Presently, the number of orphaned children in Kenya due to the HIV/AIDS pandemic is approximately 1.5 million. Without homes or relatives to turn to, most of these children do not have access to education. JOREC believes that education is a child's right and is the foundation for a brighter future, not only for the child but also for the nation.

For the orphans, JOREC's key priorities and concerns are formal and informal education, health and providing housing and other social needs. JOREC is currently supporting its orphans by seeking opportunities for their educational sponsorship through the purchase of school uniforms and materials, payment of school fees, and providing weekly feeding programs, free accommodation and access to health care.

JOREC has two orphan centers, one in Dagoretti Corner in Nairobi, and the other in East Kamagambo in Nyanza Province. In Nairobi, there are 18 students in primary school and 1 in secondary school. JOREC has also started an early childhood school for children below 3 years of age in Nairobi called Amani Junior School. The school is financed by fishing fly sales from the widows support program and personal donations. In Kamagambo, there are 15 primary school students and 2 secondary school students. The remaining students are in nursery (below 3 years of age).

Free room and board and access to health care is provided to the orphans in both Nairobi and East Kamagambo.
