ABOUT JOREC

Mission

The Joge Rescue Center (JOREC) is a Kenyan community based organization whose mission is to empower orphaned children and widows in Kenya. JOREC provides education, health care, and housing to orphans and vocational training, employment, and access to microfinance credit to widows.

Background

JOREC is a non-profit, non-denominational and non-tribal community based organization in Kenya that was established in 2005. Offices are located in Dagoretti Corner in Nairobi. JOREC currently has a registered membership of 10 widows and 27 orphaned children in Dagoretti. There is also an orphan's center in East Kamagambo, Rongo District, Nyanza province that is caring for 23 orphans.

Dagoretti Corner is one of the largest slums in Kenya with a population of approximately 1 million. Sixty-five percent of this population is made up of children, half of whom are orphans. The HIV/AIDS pandemic has had a devastating effect on the area and is a major factor in the growing population of orphans and widows.

Residents of Dagoretti came together to form JOREC in response to witnessing first-hand the hardships faced by members of their community. JOREC's vision is to create an enabling environment in which widows and orphans can develop their full potential and play proactive roles in their personal growth and part in society. Towards this end, JOREC has established orphan centers and widow support programs:
